The Kellner Family Foundation Awards Grants to 64 University Students
The Kellner Family Foundation has awarded grants to 64 gifted Czechs, who will be setting off to develop their knowledge and horizons in the 2023/2024 academic year. Most will attend undergraduate studies at foreign universities. The Universities project has accepted 19 new students, while the other 45, admitted to the scheme in previous years, are set to continue their courses with the Foundation’s support. The awarded students have selected prestigious institutions such as University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and Boston University for their studies. In recent years, the Foundation has seen increased interest in universities in Switzerland, Germany, and Scandinavia.

Over the past 14 years, 258 students from all over the Czech Republic have been awarded funding from the Foundation to cover tuition fees and other costs associated with their studies as they make the transition from secondary school to university. Over this time (between 2009 and 2022), The Kellner Family Foundation has disbursed a total of CZK 116 million in support, enabling selected Czech university students to develop their potential in their fields of study, gain international experience, and cultivate a global outlook – qualities they can use in advancing Czech society as a whole.
The Foundation has accepted 64 students into the Universities programme for the 2023/2024 academic year.
Over the next academic year, the Foundation will distribute CZK 14.9 million among these beneficiaries.
The students will be studying at 51 universities across 14 countries, two thirds of them in STEM subjects.
Among those awarded a grant were 15 Open Gate Grammar School alumni who had already benefited from the Foundation’s need-based scholarship during their secondary school studies.
The Foundation has admitted 258 students to its Universities project over the past 14 years, usually supporting them financially for three or four years.
Between 2009 and 2022, the Foundation has distributed a total CZK 116 million in grants to university students.

“The Foundation’s long-term vision is to transform society through high-quality education. With this in mind, we strive to support gifted and motivated young people from all corners of the Czech Republic, especially those who are not only determined to broaden their education beyond the borders of our country but who intend to apply the knowledge and skills they acquire to benefit our society in the future,” says trustee of The Kellner Family Foundation Petra Dobešová, describing the committee’s selection criteria during the two-round process.
All told, the students will be heading off this autumn to study at 51 universities in 14 countries. Most (18) will be pursuing studies at British universities, 14 have selected Dutch universities, 7 will be going to the US, and 7 to Ireland. “We’ve seen interest grow among grant applicants for top universities in Switzerland and Germany. In a new trend, students are turning their attention to prestigious Scandinavian universities such as the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the Technical University of Denmark,” says Petra Dobešová, discussing the most popular destinations for students.
Two thirds of successful applicants will be pursuing STEM fields
This year, 19 students will be receiving a Universities study grant from The Kellner Family Foundation for the first time. For 20 students, this will be their second year receiving support, and for another 18, it is their third. For 7 students, this will be their fourth year under the scheme.
