Last Preclinical year.

This is arguably the most demanding and stressful year in the six year medical course, at least in our faculty. The reason being it combines two broad and lenthy courses: Pathology and Microbiology among other courses.

Pathology course in our faculty basically has a clinical part i.e. clinical manifestation and autopsy which pathogenesis and morphological changes of tissues in the human body. Additionally; we tackle biopsy, cytology and molecular investigations. Special focus on oncopathological diagnostic. On the hand, microbiology has a similar pattern for clinical manifestation but instead of autopsy, we deal with modern diagnostic of bacterial, viral, mycotic and parasitic infections, including molecular genetic procedures. Instruction is focused mainly on clinical microbiological problems, i.e. diagnostic and interpretation of laboratory results, differential diagnostic, pathogenicity problems, anti-infectious immunology and antimicrobial therapy.

Other theoretical subjects include pathophysiology which more or less a branch of pathology in most other countries and Immunology, which is a one semester course that primarily focuses on research aspect of medical courses.

This year,a clinical subject was also introduced: internal medicine. Needless to say it is a broad course therefore clinical practice for students is up to the 6th year. Since Nemocnice Motol is a pediatric hospital, the course is divided into adult and pediatric internal medicine. It is further divided into czech and english internal, which is to help international students be acquainted with czech hospital terminologies.  The whole course entails and focuses on complete care of patients with internal diseases. Complete diagnostics, invasive and non-invasive treatment of GIT and liver diseases. Complete care of patients with diabetes mellitus including gestation and specific complications. Diagnostics and treatment of kidney diseases. Intensive care of patients with homeostasis disorders, applying eliminative methods. Treatment of patients with lipid metabolism disorders and nutritional disorders, diagnostics and treatment of vessel diseases. Care of patients with cardiac problems. Diagnostics and treatment of rheumatic diseases. This allows us to visit variety of different hospital departments and not only internal medicine department.
