The Mendelova Elementary School in Karviná will welcome the third edition of the Festival of Teaching Inspiration: 180 teachers and experts from all over the Czech Republic will gain inspiration for “how to teach”

On Wednesday 30 March 2016, the Mendelova Elementary School in Karviná will host the Festival of Teaching Inspiration, this time subtitled Didactica Magna. Within a few days, some 180 teachers and experts from all over the Czech Republic signed up for the event and in Karviná they will share their experience with developing reading skills at Czech elementary schools. The enormous interest from teachers made the organisers increase the capacity from the originally planned 120 places.

The Festival of Teaching Inspiration is a regular open educational event that helps to improve the quality of teaching at Czech elementary schools. It is organised by the elementary schools participating in the Helping Schools Succeed project, which is sponsored by The Kellner Family Foundation. The first two editions of the Festival took place at the Kunratice Elementary School in Prague, and this third edition is now organised by the Mendelova Elementary School and Kindergarten in Karviná. These two schools were among the very first schools that joined Helping Schools Succeed.

The Festival will mainly focus on issues related to the development of elementary school pupils’ reading skills and literacy and is intended for teachers at both levels of elementary schools. Some 180 teachers and experts from all over the Czech Republic will attend the event; they will have a choice of 14 workshops geared not only towards reading skills at both levels of elementary schools but also, for example, the importance of reading in various specialist subjects. Participants will also have an opportunity to join 17 open teaching classes of various subjects, where they will gain inspiration for their own teaching. The open classes will be followed by their detailed analysis facilitated by the Moravian-Silesian Region school teachers.

“Our original objective was to prepare a festival for 120 participants. In response to the enormous demand from teachers, we have decided to increase the capacity by one-third to a total of 180 places”, says Bohumil Zmrzlík, the Mendelova Elementary School and Kindergarten Principal.

“We closely cooperate with ten schools in our project. Thanks to the Festival, we are able to approach hundreds of elementary school teachers from all over the Czech Republic simultaneously every year. It is amazing to see how many of them are willing to learn new things, improve their teaching, and give the children an opportunity to learn with full commitment and enjoyment”, said Hana Košťálová, Programme Director of Helping Schools Succeed.

The Helping Schools Succeed project plans expansion into one hundred public primary schools

The family foundation of Mrs Renáta Kellnerová and Mr Petr Kellner has been pursuing improvement in the quality of education in public primary schools for a long time. It does so through Helping Schools Succeed, a project that to date has involved 23 primary schools from across the Czech Republic. Following ten years of the project’s successful operation in public schools, the Foundation has decided to increase the number of schools involved to about 100, which means approximately 4,000 teachers and 43,000 students. The Kellner Family Foundation has already donated a total of CZK 250 million for improving the quality of education in public primary schools and expects to provide support to the tune of approximately CZK 40 million annually.

Long-term evaluation of Helping Schools Succeed project in publicly funded primary schools: eight out of ten teachers are proud of their profession

The Helping Schools Succeed project is now in its tenth year of publicly funded primary schools. The long-term plan for improving educational standards and teachers’ professional development was initiated by the family foundation of Mrs Renáta Kellnerová and Mr Petr Kellner, which has contributed approximately CZK 37 million a year to the project over the last few years. According to a survey carried out in collaboration with experts from the Institute for Research and Development of Education at Charles University’s Faculty of Education, 91% of teachers from schools involved in the project are satisfied with their profession and 81% are proud of their profession. The survey confirmed that professional training for teachers is more effective when implemented directly in schools; the result is greater motivation and self-confidence among teachers.

The Third Summer School of Reading for teachers opens in Brno on 12 August

The third edition of the Summer School, organised by the readership promotion team of the Helping Schools Succeed project, will open on Sunday 12 August 2018. The workshops of this year’s Summer School of Reading will take place at the Orea Resort Santon on the Brno Dam until Friday 17 August 2018. Some 120 teachers from more than 45 primary schools from the whole of the Czech Republic will participate in 20 programme streams over those six days. The workshops will be led by 26 lecturers, most of whom are teachers and head teachers from the field, plus two university teachers and four teaching specialists who are not active teachers.

The Helping Schools Succeed project expands to include another three public elementary schools

The foundation of Mrs Renáta Kellnerová and Mr Petr Kellner, The Kellner Family Foundation, has accepted another three public elementary schools to the Helping Schools Succeed project, namely The 8th Elementary School in Most in the Ústí Region, the Slatiňany elementary school in the Pardubice Region, and the Elementary School and Kindergarten at Husova 17, Brno, the South Moravian Region. Helping Schools Succeed now includes some 760 teachers and, through them, 8,400 pupils.

Festival of Teaching Inspiration 2015: 500 teachers and experts from all over the Czech Republic to share teaching experience

The second edition of the Festival of Teaching Inspiration will take place in the Kunratice Elementary School this coming Friday and Saturday (November 6 and 7, 2015). The Helping Schools Succeed project encourages improvements in tuition quality in three more Regions of the Czech Republic

The Helping Schools Succeed project is branching out into three additional Regions. Beginning in the next school year, the Tomáš Šobr elementary school in Písek (South Bohemian Region), the Křížanská elementary school in Liberec (Liberec Region) and the elementary school in Staňkov (in the Domažlice District, Plzeň Region) will join the program. Since the project’s inception in 2010, approximately 300 teachers and principals from 50 public elementary schools have obtained technical assistance in improving teaching quality, to the benefit of more than 5,000 students. THE KELLNER FAMILY FOUNDATION, a family foundation of Mr. and Mrs. Kellner, finances the Helping Schools Succeed project, and donated more than CZK 35 million in grants towards its implementation last year.

Czech Teachers of English Learning How to Make Foreign Language Instruction More Attractive - An Oxford University Trainer Will Be Their Guide

A unique Oxford Teachers’ Academy course continues in the Czech Republic this year thanks to the Helping Schools Succeed project. Guided by an Oxford University Press trainer, 25 teachers of English at the junior high level of public primary schools all over the country will become acquainted with the activities to use in language classes and strategies to motivate children to be interested in English.

Helping Schools Succeed in the 2012/2013 school year

The two pilot schools (Praha 4 - Kunratice Elementary School and Mendelova Elementary School in Karviná) continue in the project for the third year. From August 2012, two new schools, the Horka Elementary School in Moravia and the Zdice Elementary School, have been taken on board following an application procedure. Hence, the team of teaching consultants has expanded to four as well.
