The Fifth Logics Olympiad taking place soon

24. August 2012 - Jihlavský deník Praha – Mensa Czech Republic has launched the fifth edition of the traditional Logics Olympiad for thoughtful youngsters from all over the Czech Republic. It is for the first time this year that the Logics Olympiad is also supported by The Kellner Family Foundation and the Open Gate eight-year grammar school.

The Kellner Family Foundation, a family foundation of Mrs. Renáta Kellnerová and Mr. Petr Kellner, focuses primarily on improving the quality of education at public elementary schools in the Czech Republic (the “Helping Schools Succeed” project), supports socially disadvantaged Open Gate students and provides grants to Czech students for studies at foreign universities (the “Universities” project). It also contributes funds to other individuals and institutions for educational, cultural and health projects. The mission of the Open gate grammar school and elementary school is to offer all young people who show sufficient academic aptitude the possibility to fulfill their potential regardless of their family background and personal situation and to prepare them for the Czech school leaving examinations and International Baccalaureate.

The OKD Foundation is another supporter of the 2012 Logics Olympiad. The event has been organized by Mensa Czech Republic for a number of years in an effort to extend the range of activities for children and young people to include a competition that requires them to think independently and logically. “Scope to excel is thus provided to the students who are not successful in conventional school subjects or come from different social and cultural environments”, says Tomáš Blumenstein, Chairman of Mensa Czech Republic. Tens of thousands of children from all over the Czech Republic take part in the competition every year. Last year alone, as many as 32,300 students from more than 1,200 elementary and secondary schools across the country were registered for the competition. “Traditionally, the Olympiad consists of three rounds, each in three age categories. An online nomination round is scheduled for the beginning of October. The regional round will be held in the Havlíčkův Brod Gymnasium (already for the third time) at the beginning of November. The decision on who wins will be made during the national round in Prague at the end of November”, explained Zuzana Šimůnková, regional coordinator of the competition in the Vysočina Region. The most successful participants will win valuable prizes again. It is for the first time this year that The Kellner Family Foundation and the Open Gate eight-year grammar school are the General Partners of the competition. “We in the Foundation have long been pursuing projects to support education and to ensure that both students and teachers are well-motivated to learn. It is with pleasure that we support a competition that develops the participants’ independent thinking skills”, says Hana Halfarová, Project Director of the Open Gate and Universities projects at The Kellner Family Foundation.

Registration for the competition has started and will continue until September 30 on the website at www.logickaolympiada.cz, where more information is available about the Olympiad.
