Open Gate graduate in 2016

I come from Děčín, a small town situated next to the northern German border of my country, which could well be the reason for my affinity for Germanic languages.

I have spent most of my life so far in Děčín. After elementary school, I spent one year at the local grammar school and then transferred to Open Gate, where I was allowed to study for the next three years thanks to the kind support from The Kellner Family Foundation. I completed my Open Gate studies by successfully passing the International Baccalaureate exams. I also took part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program. During those three truly happy years, I discovered my passion for the beauty of the languages I was learning and their respective literatures thanks to the inspiring influence of my teachers.

Some sort of passion for language and reading has been part of my life since the elementary school, but it was not until Open Gate that I decided to succumb to this compulsion when weighing the options for my future academic direction. This is also why I chose The University of Edinburgh, which has earned a reputation as a prestigious educational institution during its long history.

Goals

As far as my academic ambitions go, I am not opposed to the idea of working toward a doctorate in my field in the future. Whether I apply the knowledge gained in my studies in the practical or academic arena, I want to always find time for my original literary creations.

Interests

In my spare time I focus on languages, literature and also experimenting with my own literary pursuits, in particular poetry. I never miss an opportunity to go see a theater play. I also like spending time with my family and friends.

The End Is Near

So it truly is. The end is inexorably and with a little bit of luck also unavoidably approaching. Though the prospective reader may remain absolutely calm – with this utterance, I am not trying to prophesy the coming of some grievous finale of the currently still profoundly dreary situation which tenaciously abstains from ceasing to fundamentally affect our everyday lives. The said relentlessly approaching end naturally regards nothing but my ever-shortening time at The University of Edinburgh.

The beginning of the end

In my last entry – which (as must have been virtually impossible for any reader not to notice) somewhat unfortunately, although arguably quite inevitably, suffered in its subject matter, even more so in its tone, from an at that time already relatively long-standing dejection of its writer – I concluded, possibly rather surprisingly to some, with a slight turn in mood after the several purely pessimistic paragraphs; such a twist may, perhaps only with the best of wills in the world, be construed if not as an utter turnabout, then at the very least as a heartening change in attitude – a positive one, that is. — I mentioned the upcoming academic year and my happening to have had a good feeling about it.

Wintersemesterabschluss

It is with complete awareness of how downright stereotypically the (seemingly single) awfully long word “Wintersemesterabschluss” comes across that I make a beginning to yet another of these humble quasi-journalistic pieces of mine; nevertheless, the truth is, as it happens, somewhat different from the impression: there are, in fact, three otherwise perfectly self-sufficient words hard-hammered into the one abomination of a word which, converted to English, would mean about as much as “conclusion of the winter semester” – that is, as for my very case at any rate, fortunately a successful one.

Another year has passed

Here we go again. Once again, for the second time, I set out to write about the conclusion of the academic year, another year (excluding various holidays and other time off) spent away from my homeland, far away in Edinburgh. It almost forces one to even feel a tiny bit silly when contemplating yet again how fast a year elapsed. I talked tenaciously of the relative nature of time and its inexorable racing forward in the very first of these textual fragments of mine – and later I returned to this eternal topic on multiple occasions (and by no means do I now intend to make any vows towards the reader as to making any amends to the regular repetition of this motif in future), but not even such abundant use of this theme cannot prevent me from emphasizing strongly, anew, how unspeakably quickly the second year of my study appears to have passed – even though it did drag unbearably from time to time, that must be admitted.

Winter takes its toll

Before I irreversibly dive into a first truly proper paragraph of this sorry piece of writing of mine that could, in the end, be most open-mindedly thought a coherent text (with any luck and hopefully without too indulgent a concession), I must, humbled, offer the reader in advance with a confession: this seemingly consistent bulk of words does not, by any means, bear some extraordinarily novel theme pervading it.

This year’s summer holiday that followed the end of my first academic year at the university had come may have been long, quite long, in fact – more than a-quarter-of-a-year long, but these 100 (one hundred!) days, give or take, seem to have went by in almost no time at all; well, definitely in less than full one-hundred-days’ worth of time. I do not intend to be taken aback by it yet again this time, why should one keep wondering about it whatsoever… Such doing is doomed to be vain anyway.

One would expect that it wouldn’t take such a disproportionate amount of time. Maybe just a while after having received the result of the IB. True, possibly a bit later – no sooner than after having read the confirmation letter, or after a few days of absorbing the ultimate news.
